I looked at the wifi, but they say it may interfere with the modem, since its the same bandwave. I ended up using cable hard lines on my setup. I actually like it very much. System was about $300 on ebay. Not too bad, plus it included the dvr recorder, 500 gig HD...

There are no specific types of cameras for a typical home. Your budget will tell you which to use. Of course, if money is no object, I'd suggest wired. It's more reliable and less prone to signal loss.

The question I always ask anyone who wants to install a camera system around their home, to watch on their iphone is; why would you want to watch your home? Who has the time to watch a camera on an iphone? Pay a central station their monitoring rates, and leave the 'driving to them'. They have a job to do, and that's to watch your home. While you, on the other hand, need to earn money to pay for the monitoring, or enjoy your vacation and shut off that damn iphone.
